Metal is the one category of junk that has somewhere better to go than a landfill. Appliances, bed frames, radiators, pipe, fencing and old equipment all have value at a recycling yard — but only if someone loads it and drives it there.
LaFata Disposal Services pulls scrap metal out of basements, garages, barns and job sites around the Syracuse area and takes it to a scrap yard rather than a transfer station.
Central New York has a long industrial history and a lot of old cast iron in its housing stock. Boilers, radiators and steel beams turn up on basement jobs constantly. Metal handling is a core part of what we do, not an afterthought.
Metal we collect
- Refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters
- Cast iron radiators, boilers and pipe
- Metal bed frames, shelving and lockers
- Chain link, wrought iron and metal fencing
- Lawn mowers, snowblowers and small engines
- Ductwork, gutters and aluminum siding
- Auto parts, rims and small equipment
- Filing cabinets, desks and commercial fixtures
- Mixed light-gauge and heavy steel scrap
How scrap pickup works
1. Tell us what you have
Type and rough quantity. Clean heavy steel is different from mixed light scrap mingled with household trash.
2. We pull it out
Basement radiators, barn equipment, buried garage scrap — we handle the extraction, not just the curb pickup.
3. Sorted at the yard
Ferrous, non-ferrous and appliances get separated and routed to a scrap yard.
4. Priced accordingly
Large volumes of clean metal can reduce the cost of your job compared to general junk. Mention it when you call.
Who calls for scrap removal
- Homeowners after a boiler or furnace replacement
- Farms and rural properties clearing out old equipment
- Contractors on demolition and mechanical jobs
- Businesses removing shelving, racking or fixtures
- Anyone with a garage or barn full of metal
We are not a scrap buyer — we are a removal service. On loads that are almost entirely clean heavy metal, that value gets reflected in a lower price for the job.
We cannot take sealed drums, fuel tanks with residue, or anything containing hazardous liquid. Empty and cut-open tanks are usually fine.
Frequently asked questions
Do you pay for scrap metal?
We are a removal service, not a buyer. On loads that are predominantly clean heavy metal, that reduces what the job costs you.
Can you get a cast iron boiler out of a basement?
Yes. Sectional boilers can be broken down in place and carried out in pieces, which is how most of them come out.
Do you take mixed loads of metal and regular junk?
Yes. We sort at the truck and route the metal to a recycler and the rest to a transfer station.
Is there a minimum amount?
There is a minimum charge for the trip, so a small pile of metal costs about the same as a modest full load.
